Last night was the last SOTU for President Bush. Did we hear anything new? Not really, but all-in-all it was a decent speech. There were some zingers thrown in though. So here is what I heard that was cool and not cool.
Cool:
Bush hit the taxers with a good line although it most likely fell on deaf ears: “Others have said they would personally be happy to pay higher taxes. I welcome their enthusiasm. I’m pleased to report that the I.R.S. accepts both checks and money orders.” Please note that the only way to raise taxes is with the barrel of a gun. I don’t even think Dems like to pay taxes since I do not see the them sending anything extra to the IRS.
Cutting ear marks was music to my ears. I think this is way a little to late though. If he really wanted to make a difference, he would have done this in the beginning of his presidency. In this case, better late than never is almost the same thing.
Making the tax cuts permanent. Maybe he should have talked more about the increased revenue taken in by the Treasury Department since the tax cuts were put in place.
Good comments on the Iraq War, especially concerning how the surge was labeled failed even before it began (I thought Pelosi was going to puke – heh). Dems don’t care about Iraq or the Iraqi people. Dems seem to have this boutique view of who they will help and not help. Take for instance the recent “I have to have a baby from Africa” folks Madonna and Jolie. Their fad for the year. We must help them, but not the folks in Iraq? The best thing Republicans can do is bring up Vietnam. That’s right, Vietnam. Post Vietnam was a disaster and showed how heartless the Dems really are. They started the war, but ended up causing mass murder, torture, and suffering because they would not finish it. Same with Korea – no different. So bringing up post-Vietnam would be a good strategy right now.
Not Cool:
Immigration reform raised it’s ugly head again. Seal the border and enforce the laws. Deny federal funds to sanctuary cities. Works in Arizona – nuff said.
To many programs! First we complain about ear marks and then complain that we want to spend more on programs. Is this ever going to end? Spending is out of control as it is with Social Security heading toward bankruptcy. If the President had used his capital to do this stuff in his first term, we would still have a Republican majority in both House and Senate. We would also be doing better in the Presidential Race.
